Have You Ever Painted to Music?

Have you ever painted a music? The first artist who did that was Wassily Kndinsky. It is said that he once listened to music and was so impressed that he wanted to paint it.

We, the painting students, had to choose our favorite music. The music must be plain music without any singer who sings a song. Even if someone sings, we must not paint the lyrics at all. We were supposed to pay attention solely to the rhythm and musical instruments translating them into colors and shapes. The Painting must be abstract. Depicting landscapes, human beings, flowers, etc, were not allowed and we were free to choose any strange or unusual tools to complete our paintings. For example, we could throw the colors at our canvas from a far distance or we could use papers or glasses gluing them to the canvas.

My favorite music was a traditional and spiritual song. You can listen to it here. If I want to translate its Persian name into English, it would be "I'm eager to see God." Despite the fact that I must choose a plain music without any singer in it, mine had a singer and the lyrics was about God. In the lyric, it was said that everywhere I go or at whatever I look, I see God. Then the poem explained more that human beings can see God in a butterfly or in the eyes of a children or elderly people.

Since my music was very spiritual, I chose spiritual and sacred geographic shapes. The color purple is also very spiritual. That is why it is used in churches and it is said if you look at the color purple for a while, you would have a deep meditation. Then, I used seven colors to represent seven musical instruments playing in my music. I won't describe other elements in my painting so that you would be free to interpret it as you like and I indeed appreciate if you tell me what you think. Does my painting represent the music? What do you think? Have you ever painted to music?

This is what I finally painted.

  • PS- I didn't ever tried painting to music. But I love it. Music is something that can be interpreted in different minds so differently, so is painting. Music is not definite like math. 2+2 is always 4 but meaning of a piece of music is never definite. The way we see a kind of music depends on our memory of the time we heard it, or our mood when we listened to it. Music with no song is like what I said. But, when there is a song, the way of our thinking is directed by the poems, yet, people may still have different points of views over a single song.

  • It's like a rosary (string of beads to count prayers).

In the poem drops of tear are mentioned; so there might be lots of drops in the painting; maybe as the beads in the string of prayers. Also the beads are in shape of diamond; it means that they are so precious.

I think there is a kind of infinity in the painting. The number of beads is countless. Beads start from being big in size to being so small as if they are just a tiny colored dot. It adds dimension to the painting.

I like the idea of using two extreme colors as backgrounds- brightness and darkness. You begin with white and you end up with dark blue if I am right

There is a big ring which holds everything together; it means that we are united under the territory of God.

I can see a mirror. In the white background, which seems to be something like a wall, there is a mirror with a plain yellow or golden frame. It could be a window, too.

I liked the idea of Sahar, too; it's like a galaxy because of the mix and kind of colors.

Anyway, Nafis, you are really doing great in your paintings. I love it. Keep up with the great work.

    Have all the best.

    Thanks for sharing with us.

    :)

  • @Nafis

It may not be that hard to learn Chinese language if you are really interested in it. I find some of the foreigners who are living in China can speak Chinese very well. English may seem easy to learn, but it takes time and effort to learn it well. It seems Arabic language is hard to learn - maybe it is not that hard. I may try to lean a little Arabic!

  • Gorgeous! I would love to have this painting in my office. :)

Yes, I have painted to music. I remember doing that exercise with my kids. It was a wonderful experience! We used piano music.

  • How interesting!

It's the first time that I'm hearing it!!

    Painting a melody!

    Great job!

    It is really absorbing.

And you painted it very nice!

It reminds me a galaxy and there is a harmony inside its heart.

When it is starting from the first purple shape in the left-bottom of this paint until the last one of its brown and blue, it is saying that there is a special order among them, but yet other shapes which are not in this order have a relationship with them too.

And the thousands of this order that are in the far distance just like stars in a galaxy. And it says that there are a lot of this meaning in the space.

I liked your painting so much. specially those purple shapes which you chose.

    Maybe they are flowers :)

  • Dear Tawfeeq, thank you so much. So nice of you. Glad you liked it.

  • Hi, Lovely Mitran, hehehehehe! Yes, I used toothbrush to paint and it was fun doing that. My friends also were so creative, they used aluminum sheets on their canvass or some throw color on the canvas. You can try to paint music. It is so much fun.

  • I enjoy reading your nice blog , really it is impressive one .Thanks .

  • Dear Expector, I think each person has a unique talent. You may not know how to paint or draw ,but you are a skillful doctor. I can't be a doctor even though I wish I could be a doctor. hehehehe! So, you have another great talent dear Expector.

Chinese alphabet seems like a puzzle to me and I am so surprised how people memorize all these lines and forms. I've seen Chinese who try to learn English, in the beginning, they have so many problem learning English, but when they learn it, they speak and write so well in English. I think it's because of their own language. I don't know if I 'm right or not ,but I noticed this through my experiences with my Chinese friends.

  • lol..dear Nafis, Really? toothbrush to paint....Oh, let's me try the same....kekeke....

Lovely post as you are....I enjoy it.
