Gun control

This week, US Government and both Houses of Congress are going to conclude a thorniest issue recently in USA: Gun control. Up to now, this country has been known as a free country where people are not restricted from owning a firearm. This free right, on one hand, has allowed US citizen to protect themselves with a personal hot weapon, but on the other hand, it has made a lot of tragedies namely some indiscriminate shootings recently at elementary schools in USA.

Actually, this controversial issue has been in tension so far. Some would like to allow US citizen having firearm freely as before. According to their opinion, Government cannot be everywhere at all times, so limiting their right of owning gun will make them less safe. The others oppose this opinion, because they do not want to witness more similar tragedies occurring in America as having been ever.

If the USA bipartisan senators came here and ask my opinion about this issue, I would show them some clips or photos about victim of shooting tragedies having ever happened in America, I also wanted them to think about pains and losses that victim families had borne. In my view, giving citizens a gun for them to self protect is not a very wrong idea, but giving firearm to everyone also means people would not be safe at all time, at all places.

I agree with an US Democratic Senator's opinion:"Liberty is not about having any gun you want, liberty also has to be about the right to be free from indiscriminate violence".

  • After all, US Senate have said NO with "gun control" bill draft from White House. President Obama says he will not abandon the fight against this issue..

  • Thanks for your comment IAV. We all know that culture is not something unchangeable, similar to the custom of bursting firecracker at Eve in Vietnam before, in fact such custom was changed upon Government had been aware of its harmful impact.

However, that's why this is called "controversial issue". I suppose US lawmakers are not some kind of officials who administer their country according to the policy of "you are out of control of it then you ban it". I believe they would give a satisfactory decision to deal with this problem. Let's wait til the end of this week.

  • In my humble opinion:

It must be said that the individual possession of guns is extremely popular in US. No one knows exactly number of firearms owed by private citizens in US. I wonder whether this becomes a typically cultural feature of US or not. I have seen the phrase "Gun Culture" or "America as a Gun Culture" in some articles of US. Many US citizens own guns are not only like a way of protecting themselves, but also due to their own hobbies. It's similar to the case of a gunman in an elementary school in central Connecticut, US, the gunman's mother is a woman of hobby in guns collection. Even I suppose that this is an essential demand in some of states of US like a bed, a radiator, etc. in their house. For this reason, the officials become more difficult to issue a compatible law of gun-control. For me personally, I also want to have a gun if possible. But I totally agree with you, guns need controlling effectively to avoid recurrences of shooting tragedies.

  • In my country, possession of firearm is not allowed in any form (Except for hunting gun). If one person is detected owning a firearm, then he will be accused for "illegally keeping a firearm" and may be put behind bars.
