Girls Day in Japan

March 3 is Girls Day in Japan.When I was a kid ( it was about 30 years ago =p) families bought expensive and beautiful desplays of dolls to celebrate having daughters. But these days it's popular to buy more less expensive ones, for example, only two main dolls or dolls made by cheep materials haha ^^ I think that's okay.

Because gorgeous ones ( they have seven steps and many kinds of dolls)  are seriously expensive. There are even some types of displayshas which costs more than 1,000,000 yen( about 12,000 dollars) Moreover, some families can't have enouth space to put the large displays in thier house.

It is said that we have to put them away as soon as after Girls Day, or the girl may miss a proper time of marriage. As for me, my parents bought me a plastic bullet train instead of displays of dolls when I was a kid. They said, "We were going to buy dolls, but you said you wanted that bullet train!"

This is a gorgeous displays of dolls.

This one has only two main dolls.

Maybe this one is cheap, I think =)

  • Thanks Natasha,

    These days a lot of new things come and go away so quickly. That's kinda regrettable. I think it is really important to hand down our culture to posterity.

    p.s. The new avatar is just MY NAME in Kanji (Chinese character) ^^;

  • Kaoru, it's  brilliant - these dolls and traditions!

    You've changed your avatar, it's mysterious, I like it... ^_^

  • Hi ika,

    Yeah, I know Asari-Chan ^^ and I also like Maya Kitajima. But I can't tell you the end, because it‘s been going on! I thought that it had stopped without being completed. But actually I found and read its latest episode last week! Do you know when it was first pubslished? In 1976! But even for more than 30 years, Kurenai Tennyo hasn't been put on the stage yet. To be honest, I almost forgot about the story haha =P

  •

    Hahaha your comments are always interesting to me, Hardi ^o^

    Yeah, a flying bullet train must be really cool. Plus, I want to be a toy sized human, then get inside, and operate it! It would be great, right? ;)

    Right now, I'm not interested in trains really. So I don't know about all that. But if I have a chance to get on a SL (Steam Locomotive), I would be happy to though! Check the short video I found on Youtube today. You could watch a SL and a Shinkansen running side by side. It's a really curious sight that shows us "past" and "present"

  • That train must be very proud, to carry a passenger who is about 3 times bigger, than the train it self is. I wonder whether it could still, pass through of under bridges and tunnels while carring so tall passenger.. probably not. Maybe it could grow wings and fly over..

    Are you still interested of trains Kaoru?

    I saw from news, that they opened a new pullet train In Japan. "E5 series Shinkansen" or something. It can run with top speed of 300Km/h..

    Well I'm actually not knowledgeable about trains... I think I have ride train only once, when I was still kid. It was a slow diesel train...

  • Hi ika, thanks for reading my post.

    You like Japanese culture and you've read many Japanese comics! That's great! I didn't know and I'm glad to hear that ^^

  • Hi, thank you for reading my blog ^^

    @Nadira

    I'm glad to know you find Japanese culture interesting.Thanks!

    @nida

    Thank you for the nice comment. Also it's very nice of you to send such a beautiful dolls of photo to Japanese little girls. Your photo is definitely much better than mine haha ^^

    @Monika

    Even the girls in your photo are also dolls, aren't they? I'm not sure they are real girls or not. If they are real, they would be our grand-grand-grand-grand mother! Thanks for very interesting photo!

    @Karenina & Widya

    Oh, then I'll show you my bullet train, if you like.

    2381083179?profile=originalYeah, this is my choice. A Bullet Train is called "Shinkansen" in Japan.

    @Hardi & Fizzy

    Both of you like the wooden dolls? Me too! And Fizzy, maybe you're right. It seems a bit scary at the dark room haha. Hey Hardy, I like your idea very much. If I had the dolls my grandfather had made for me from scratch, I would be the best ones in the world. It could be priceless ^_^

  • Happy Girls Day Kaoru,

    Its nice knowing more about your culture. (^-^)o

    I like to wooden doll better atleast not looks like real human.. (^-^)v i dont like it if its looks like human.. it will scare me in the night by looking at the doll

  • I like the last ones, that you thought to be cheap. They looks like made of wood. Perhaps they aren't that cheap... Well they might be, if they are mass producted imitations, made of plastic.. But I still like them. I wonder if a girl would be happy for these dolls, but how about if his grandfather made them to her from wood he selected by him self? ...

    It's cool that you wanted a bulleting train. ^_^
