having the first idea takes time and patience. do not start writing until u have thought about your topic for a while. if you do not get any good idea for writing right off, u should relax, may be an idea will come to u later when u are walking home or eating dinner. Even if you have only an hour for an in a class assignment , think as regards ur topic for a few mints before you begin to write.
A general topic usually is assigned by an instructor for paper and you have to find a specific part of the topic to write on. at time , though , you will be asked to find a topic by yourself. then you will be both lucky and unlucky , because ( lucky) you can write on anything interests you as well as ( unlucky) making all decisions are hard work. if the choice is yours , use it , pick a topic you will really enjoy.
When the instructor assigns a topic , then it is ur challenge to find things u know about and are interested in that relate to the topic. you have to question yourself to find out what you have to say on the matter. the following questions will help you find ideas to write about , based on what you already know and think.
Questions for finding ideas
- how many different subjects are included under the general topic? " sports" includes baseball, football , tennis, hockey , and many other games.
- Do you have any personal knowledge about any part o the topic? can u tell a true story that relates to the assignment? if you ever worked for a corporation, you probably know many things that will help you with the topic " how companies are Organized ". how many bosses did u have? who was responsible to whom? how much did rank count and how did you gain rank? what tasks did each department perform?
- Do you have an opinion or feeling about any part of the topic? can you back up that opinion or feeling? you have not interest in and no knowledge of the topic " the future of the internet" except for your exasperation at all the claims that the internet is the most revolutionary technology since the wheel. personally , you find it no more exciting than the marketing of a new color of fingernail polish. you can use your memory of all the exaggerated and exasperating commentaries about the internet to write that the only sure thing about its future is that there will continue to be overblown accounts and overinflated claims.
- Do you know of a book, newspaper or magazine article, movie, or TV show that relates to any part of the topic? does it give you any ideas? perhaps your local newspaper has been publishing stories about difficulties faced by immigrant families in your community or about local factories that have been relying on immigrant or about local factories that have been relying on immigrant labor--- stories that will give you some help in developing your own ideas on " immigration and the American Economy".
