My friends, here is one more intermediate test for you and this time, it will be the last. I have already explained almost all such mistakes. This test is the same as previous: the tenses, the voices, the articles, the prepositions, GO/COME, TAKE/BRING. Sure, there may be some other mistakes, so, just be attentive. You know what to do!

Here is your task:

  1. I have asked where did she put my briefcase as I could not find it for long (5 mistakes).
  2. Cigarette smoked in ashtray because it not put out (4).
  3. I knew she couldn’t accept my proposal until I am changed (3).
  4. The letter couldn’t deliver as the address written illegible (3).
  5. When puppy was taken home, it hardly was turned 3 month old (6).
  6. When we got to the car, she recalled, she forgot her purse home and asked me come back and take it (7).
  7. While she was out, her pets took care by their neighbor (4).
  8. Despite she lived in NYC for many years, she was sorry yet to go away of her hometown (6).
  9. I hoped all snacks were not eat our guests and something must leave (5).
  10. All mistakes already are explained, many tests are done. What else explain you? (5)

The deadline is March 13.

And I do want to ask you, what parts of the intermediate grammar are not clear, yet. Please, tell me and I will post my explanations.

Good luck and have a great weekend!

March 13

Hi, everyone! I am posting the answers and my explanations. You know, you may ask me your questions.

  1. I ___ asked where she had put my briefcase as I had not been able to find it for long (5 mistakes).
  2. A cigarette smoked in the ashtray because it had not been put out (4).
  3. I knew she wouldn’t be able to accept my proposal until after I changed (4).
  4. The letter couldn’t be delivered as the address had been written illegibly (3).
  5. When the puppy was brought home, it had hardly turned 3 months old (6).
  6. When we got into the car, she recalled, she had forgotten her purse at home and asked me to go back and to bring it (7).
  7. While she was away, her pets were being taken care of by her neighbor (4).
  8. Despite living in NYC for many years, she was still sorry __ to have come (or for coming) away from her hometown (6).
  9. I hoped all the snacks hadn’t been eaten by our guests and something must have been left (5).
  10. All the mistakes have already been explained, many tests have been done. What else to explain you? (5)

Well, here are my explanations.

  1. We always use a reporting verb in the simple tense. Both actions had been before I asked my question. Sure, COULD has no tenses. But we can replace it with TO BE ABLE and to use it in the past perfect tense.
  2. A cigarette hadn’t been put out. It was lying in the ashtray smoking. However, it is a complex sentence where one of the verbs must be in the simple tense. TO PUT OUT means TO EXTINGUISH.
  3. I think it is one of the hardest. The idea of this sentence is following: I asked her to marry me but she said she would agree only after I changed. So, the reported speech is in the future past. As I have already told you, we don’t usually use the perfect tenses in the time clauses speaking about the future.
  4. It is easy. Somebody had written the address so illegibly that a mailman couldn’t read it and couldn’t deliver a letter. The sentence is in the passive voice.
  5. The puppy was BROUGHT home as it became its home since then. That time it was 3 months old. So, it had hardly turned 3 months old BEFORE it was brought home. Besides, we use an adverb inside a compound predicate.
  6. She had forgotten to take her purse and recalled that fact when we got into the car. So, she asked me to GO BACK home (I was moving from her and from our car) and to BRING it (on my way back I was moving toward her and our car).
  7. TO BE OUT means to leave not for long. In this case, there is no need to take care of the pets. So, if she asked her neighbor to look after her pets, she was going TO BE AWAY (in some other town) for some time. It is clear she was planning to be back. So, the neighbor was asked to take care of the pets for some short period. It is the past progressive tense, the passive voice.
  8. New York was not her hometown. She had been born somewhere else. So, living in NY she was sorry for coming away (or to have come away) from her hometown to NY. Now, DESPITE (IN SPITE OF) is followed by a noun/gerund phrase while ALTHOUGH is followed by a clause.
  9. Yesterday/the day before we had a party with a lot of snacks. Our guests ate much. So, in the morning I could only hope they left us something to eat. The sentence is in the passive voice.
  10. Well, you know I mean myself. So, I have explained everything by NOW. And it is the passive voice.

Thanks everone! I hope, it was useful!

  • Dear Luci, I think I had too much on the weekend but trust me, your hasty answers were just like a drop in the ocean! Well, I had enough beer to take off my hard hangover. Thanks for your care! I am a big boy!

1 is correct and your train of thought is correct, too. But FOR LONG is correct as well as FOR A LONG TIME, just for you to know.

2 is correct. Well, I will try to answer your question although it is not easy to do. You see, only the simple tense tells us WHEN the action took place. It is like the coordinate origin. The other tenses describe the processes. We can't use any other past tenses if there is no  verb in the simple form in the complex sentence. I think I will write a blog on this subject when I get sober or drunk enough.

    3. You are rght about WOULDN'T BE ABLE, but TILL can't be followed by a clause. As I have already said,  the idea of this sentence is following: I asked her to marry me but she said she would agree only after I changed.

    4. CORRECT!

    5. WHY? Wonna me to suicide? It hadn't tured 3 BEFORE it was brought home!

    6. CORRECT, but TO bring.

    7. She was GONE is incorrect, but SHE WAS AWAY is exactly on the money!

    8. Look, this part is wrong "she has been sorry yet ".

    9. My gusts were at my home yesterday/the day before. The tense is wrong in this clause, but all the rest is correct.

    10. Everything is OK except the last phrase "What else to explain you?"

  • Well, Danny ...firstly take a shot of vodka - it will make you calm and then read my corrections :D yesterday I swear I read all the tests and went through your grammar blogs..I decided to learn something and also to work on my English... in fact my last attempt kicked me...
    1. I have asked where did she put my briefcase as I could not find it for long (5 mistakes).
I asked where she had put my briefcase as I hadn't been able to find it for a long time.
(So now I got it :D Firstly she put it somewhere then I was searching for it - I guess there should be in both cases past perfect)

    2. Cigarette smoked in ashtray because it not put out (5).
The cigarette smoked (was smoking) in the asthray because it hadn't been put out.
(Well :D why past simple??? here I think as it happened in the past for a while I can use past continuous tense too, no? and past perfect because put out should be the first and smoking ciggy is the impact - later..hope I got it right)

    3. I knew she couldn’t accept my proposal until I am changed (4).
I knew she wouldn't be able to accept my proposal till I would have changed.
(Finally after reading many tests I got it :D could in the future is ofc will be able to... shame on me! Anyway - i am not sure about the second part....shhh calm down plz!)

    4. The letter couldn’t deliver as the address written illegible (3).
The letter couldn't be delivered as the address had been written illegibly.
(Sooo like u said..firstly they wrote address thats why past perfect then they delievered it and haha after my good enough you won't get me with illegible :D )

    5. When puppy was taken home, it hardly was turned 3 month old (6).
When the puppy had been brought home, it hardly turned 3 months old.

    6. When we got to the car, she recalled, she forgot her purse home and asked me come back and take it (7).
When we got into the car, she recalled, she had forgotten her purse at home and asked me to go back and bring it.

    7. While she was out, her pets took care by their neighbor (5)
While she was gone :D or away?, her pets were being taken care by her neighbour.
(First is the past and second must be past continuous plus here it is voice if m not wrong but grr that's too advanced for idiot like me :D)
    8. Despite living in NYC for many years, she was sorry yet to go away of her hometown (6).
Despite living in NYC for many years, she has been sorry yet to come away from her hometown.

    9. I hoped all snacks were not eat our guests and something must leave (5).
I hoped all the snacks weren't eaten by our guests and something must have been left.
(Here I am little bit lost :D)

    10. All mistakes already are explained, many tests are done. What else explain you? (4)
All the mistakes have already been explained, many tests have been done. What else am I going to explain you?
(no idea what else could be there if it is wrong)
  • Hi, dear Wolf! 4 is correct and I have nothing to add.

    3. You see, the idea of this sentence is following: I asked her to marry me but she said she would agree only after I changed. I am sorry, but your sentence doesn't convey this idea.

    8. TO BE SORRY is followed by the gerund or the infinitive and your first attempt was correct, but you used the past perfect tense in this clause. It must be the simple tense as she was sorry while living in NY.

  • Dear Teacher Danny

Thanks a lot for helping us. Let me try to correct the remaining three.

I knew she wouldn’t have been able to accept my proposal before I changed.

    4. The letter couldn’t be delivered as the address had been written illegibly.

    8. Despite living in NYC for many years, she was sorry that she had come away from her hometown.

  • Dear Luci, your answer just added fuel to the fire, but was not the reason for my being a little frustarted these days.I hope, you will correct your mistakes.

  • Thanx Danny,
I worked on my corrections yesterday and omg i feel bad abt all these bullshits I posted :/ no woder it made you furious :D
  • Dear Luci, I hope you will forgive my impolite reply on Saturday. I was really upset by your second attempt. However, I will explain your mistakes again. Although I am not an English teacher, I do know how to use the tenses correctly.

    1. The verbs in both subordinate clauses must be either in the past perfect or the present perfect tense (if I have just asked).

    2. First, I didn't put out a cigarette. It was lying in the ashtray smoking. But it is a complex sentence and one of the verbs MUST be in the past simple tense.

    3. The last part of the sentence is a time clause. We don't use the future tenses in such clauses.

    4. It is quite clear that someone wrote the address illegibly (it was the first action). As a result, a mailman couldn't deliver a letter (the second action). And it is the passive voice.

    5. A puppy was brought home some time AGO. At that moment it was not 3 months old, yet.

    6. Well, I can agree with the past perfect tense in the first clause, but COME back is wrong!

    7. If she had been OUT, there wouldn't have been any need to take care of her pets. Most probably, she left for vacation or to see her relatives living in another town.

    8. I can't understand why you combine the past and the present perfect tenses in one sentence! Besides, we can't use a clause after DESPITE.

    9. HOPE is a reporting verb in this sentence. It MUST be in the simpe tense. Besides, we recieved our guests yesterday/ the day before.

    10. My snetence "What else explain you?". Something is missing here, but not WILL and not TO before YOU. YOU is an indirect object and it immediately follows a verb. We don't need TO before it.

  • Thanks my dear teacher! And thanks for your kind words. I'm not gonna beat myself up :)
