My friend Anju and I were standing in line to book tickets for a movie. It was getting longer than we expected and Anju was getting annoyed.

She told me that she would go to the inquiry desk and ask why they hadn't opened the office yet.

She came back after a while and reported that they told her they would open the office only at 11 o'clock.

"11 o'clock? That means we have to stand here for another hour!" I said, exasperated.

Just then, a group of rough looking men came and cut in front of the line. I was furious. Why they can't see it is unfair to do such a thing, I thought to myself. But I did not dare to say anything in case they got angry.

One of them started to smoke a cigarette. "Excuse me, Sir, this is a non- smoking area," Anju told him before I could stop her.

He didn't seem to mind about it at all. He just gave her a blank look and kept puffing.

Another man asked him what Anju said.

"Oh, the madam said it is a non-smoking area!" he said in a mocking voice and his group started to sneer and hoot.

Their body language and their meanness told me that we would get into trouble if we stayed there any longer. I dragged Anju out of the theater and told her that they looked dangerous and we could watch the movie next Sunday.

She broke her hand free from my clutch and said angrily, "I don't think they are dangerous. You are just making a mountain out of a molehill! I wish I had come with someone else!" Then she started her bike and left.

When I rode back home I couldn't help wondering if I really was making a mountain out of a molehill like Anju said.

  • Hi Shoba,

Women are sometimes thought of as always making a mountain out of a molehill in many situations but that is a quality that helps us to get into the gist of the problem and also more often than not solve a problem, so it is not so bad although if were Anju I would be sad to miss the movie, I love movies!  You did a great job with your writing here! :)

It was interesting to read about your thoughts on smoking. I agree with you and feel that cigarette smokers should be more considerate of the people around them. Thank you for your valuable comment!
