Hi, my friends! Here I am, your boring and strict teacher who wants to give you one more assignment. It will be as tricky as the rest but now, you all are supposed to be much more experienced in answering my tricky questions and using your logic and common sense. So, your task is the same as in the previous blog: you should find a single word that may be a synonym of the given idiom or a phrasal verb, OK?

Let's start! Ready? Here are five more idioms. Just try to find synonyms using your common sense! Replace the idiom with its synonym, OK?

1. Why did you leave out the second question on my list?

2. The meeting was put off until the next week.

3. I ran into my friend last week.

4. This ship is bound for Europe.

5. We tried in vain to reach him.

Good luck in everything you do!

  • Why did you overtake the second question on my list?

Danny, if it is wrong please tell me the answer because unfortunately I don't have time to come in EC...

  • 1.why didn't you do the second question on my list?
2.The meeting was delayed until the next week
3.I met my friend last week
4.This sheep is going to Europe
    5.we could not reach him
  • My dear Elen! 3 and 5 are 100% right. As to 1. "To skip" is not the synonym. It is my fault, no doubts. I gave you a wrong example. Sure, in the given example "to skip" sounds very right. But "to leave out" means something different. Let me give you some other examples:

Your essay was quite good, but you left out several important dates and events.

Reading a fiction I happened to leave out a few pages and could hardy understand some events later.

You see, "to skip" and "to leave out" are very close, but not the same.

Will you give it one more try, please?

  • Hi again.

    1. Why did you skip the second question on my list?

    3. I came across/met my friend last week.

    5. We tried unsuccessfully to reach him.

Thanks for your great explanations :)

  • Dear Setareh! Thanks for reacting! I was really afraid of having offended you with my joke. But I'd like you and all the rest to know that teachers can't offend their students. It is absolutely inadmissible and unbelievable!

Thanks for understanding and your warm words!

    Have a nice day!

  • Dear Mishaikh! Right! I do omit some letters! To be be exact, I press some keys very softly. But as a result, the necessary character isn't dispayed. The rest are correct, no comments! Thank you and hope to see your comments on my future blogs!

  • Dear Danny, I didn't get offended. I was worried that you got offended by what I wrote which I never ever had such intention in my mind. You deserve great respect and I do have respect for you. Wish yoy all the best.
  • 1) Slip (slip of finger while typing) OR omit.

    2) postponed.

    5) unsuccessful.

  • Dear Michaikh! Well, 3 and 4 are right! Ther rest are very close, but the words you used are not synonyms of the given idioms. So, here are my explanations and prompting questions in bold.

1.I think it is my fault. Perhaps, I have to change the given example to make things clearer. But I will try to explain the meaning of this phrasal verb. I am inattentive when I type. So, instead of"here" I may type "hre", for example. What is the verb describing such a typo?

    2. I will interpret you the meaning of the given example. The meeting was assigned for today, for example, but something  happened and we've decided to meet the next week. So, how to describe our decision? What have we done?

    5. You've got the idea, but the word is wrong. "ineffectively" is not a synonym. Just imagine that a person has no cell and you dial his home number many times, but there is no answer because he is out.  You had to takl to him, but he was unavailable. So, how to call the result of your actions?

Will you give it one more try, please?

  • 1) Why did you skip the second question my list?
    2) The meeting was delayed/put in abeyance until the next week.
    3) I met my friend last week.
    4) This ship is heading to Europe.
    5) We tried ineffectively to reach him.
