Doesn’t medicine go too far by giving birth to foetus weighting only 500 grams ?
According to belgian gynecologists weight does not matter as much as the fetus (foetus) number of weeks. A little baby girl weighting 460 grams was born at 25 weeks and was kept alive for 7 months in a special premature unit in a belgian hospital.Today, at 7 months, she weighs 4.2 kg and measures 54 centimeters. Since yesterday and though she still have many health problems, she sleeps in her own bed in her parent’s home.
Jana, that’s her name, is still very fragile and according to the doctors, it’s only when she will be 3 years old that she should be healthier. Till then, that little cute will have to fight to have a ”normal” baby life; she will have to go through eyes and heart surgeries without being assured that everyting will be fine for her in the futur. At 25 weeks, a baby has 50% of chance to survie and the chance not to have “side-effects” are pretty much the same. In that matter, medicine advances are huge, but still that, in this survival, between 15 and 25 % of the babies will have sensorineural and mental problems.
Discussion Question:
What’s your opinion about doctors trying to keep alive foetus, weighting less than 500 grams, thought they know those little angels will have to go through many pain and health problems ? Should we keep these babies alive by all means ?
Comprehension questions
1. Where did Jana live the first seven months of her life ?
2. When does her health should be better ?
3. How old was the baby when the could finally leave the hospital ?

Hello Robert,
Thank you for your interest and comment to this post. You deserve a 10/10 for your answers. Bravo.
Hello Forget-me-not,
Thank you very much for posting one of the sensitive issues nowadays...Since I was brought up in a catholic country, I have a deeper respect for human life. I think doctors should try their best to help the unborn baby to experience life even how painful the outcome would be.
Here are the answers on your questions....
1. Jana spent her first seven months living in special premature unit hospital in Belgium.
2. Jana's health would become better when she reach the age of three.
3. Jana had finally left the hospital when she was 7 months old.
Thank you also for your recording. The tone and pronunciation of words were great too. Good job my friend.
Thanks for spending some time to read and to comment this blog. You pointed out a very important argument. I mean, the will of a premature baby's parents to keep him/her alive.
Of course no parents would accept to let their baby die, even is he/she is a deep premature of 480 grams. I would not accept either, thougt it would be a real conscience problem for me to decide to keep him/her alive by any means, without knowing if, later on, he/she will be able to live on her/his own without depending of others. I am so glad i never had to deal with this huge problem.

Hi dear Manuela,
I really enjoyed reading your blog post along with listening to your nice voice.
I think, those angels should be kept alive. I guess their mom and dad would decide to keep their baby. Their deep feeling won't let them not keep their baby.
Thanks,
Have a nice time
:)
Yes, it's very hard for pediatriscians to keep those little human being alive. It's also very painful for those babies to grow far from the warmth ad cares of their parents, as to be obliged to grow with the tube of the artificial respirator down their throat. But i want to believe it's for their best...
That's great, you succeed in answering the 'comprehension questions'. I give you 10/10 :))
The 'discussion question' is a delicate one and i understand you didn't answer to it. But you know, though i knew it wouldn't be an easy topic to talk about, i wrote that question because i am really interested in member's answers. I guess the answers to this question could be very different depending on which part of the world they would come, that's why i asked it. Thanks so much for taking part of this post .
Thank you for "loving" my news. It's always nice to see that, a post we wrote has the interest of members here.
Thank you for your interest to this post and for the comment you wrote about it. It's good to know that your nephew had no sequelae and that is perfectly fine now.
