COCONUT PALM! TREE OF LIFE!

The coconut palm, Cocos nucifera, belongs to the family Arecaceae or some people call it the Palmae family. Actually, the fruit of this superlative palm is botanically defined as a drupe that consists of three outer most layers such as: exo-carp, meso-carp and endo-carp respectively. In the case of coconut (actually, the word “nut” is a mis-terminology in this case), the endo-carp is a hard shell. Most of the higher plants could basically be divided into three sections such as: the root system, the stem, the shoot system (or the crown area). What is the uniqueness with coconut?  The coconut palm is one of the higher plants in the world that provides food, drink, shelter and materials for the usage of human. What it means! The whole mass of the coconut palm could be utilized for the interest of human, nothing is left or wasted!

This wonderful palm is grown well in tropical and sub-tropical regions in the world. The rain fall, temperature and altitude (elevation) are the most important environmental factors to be considered in cultivating coconut palms on large scale. When the elevation increases, the temperature drops down fast and hence, the adaptability of coconut palm for such environments could drastically be gone down. But, the regions on the equator or much closer to the equator would get coconut palms at comparatively higher elevations.

The kernel (edible fleshy part deposited along the inner surface of the nut) is the most economically important part of the fruit. Somebody could say that the kernel part is the heart of coconut industry because there couldn’t be a coconut industry without kernel production. The coconut milk, which is extracted from the kernel, is freely available in the market in the powder form. The coconut milk is mostly used by people for cooking purposes; especially people living in the tropical belt make use of coconut milk for various food preparations. On the other hand, the coconut oil plays a leading role in this legend. Some powerful business communities attempt at showing a wicked picture about the composition of coconut oil because they have a plan to manipulate the market forces on their own for some substitute plants oils. Actually, people in tropical belt have been using coconut oil for many centuries without any special health problem and in my country; coconut oil is a cultural hallmark. In a nut shell, this divine palm tree is really a tree of life!

Good Luck!

  • Hi Bimal,

In my country, Coconut tree is very useful, we can drink and eat the fruits it is very fresh and good for our health. Their leafs would be used for covering the top of a house. someone use them to make a coconut-leaf-house in some travel area, or just build some coffee houses for walker to take a rest. that would be the most pleasant feeling under the hot weather like as Vietnam. :)

And addition, the trunk would be separated into so many line... i think, then they make rope from them. So many way to take advantage of this tree, people also did some cute things from this.

I think this is very valuable tree. :) thanks for sharing.

  • Dear Surawan,

    THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

It is difficult to say exactly why your palm is having no fruits. But, the fruit bearing ability is dependent on different factors. Improved varieties (hybrid varieties) bear fruits at early stages compared to traditional varieties. However, water logging areas are not suitable for coconut palm. Nutrient level and some other factors are very significant for fruit bearing ability. Some palms bear flowers (inflorescence) and abort fruits at very early days. So, I think you can understand that it is not easy to answer your query in a simple way. If possible, please send me more details and then, I’ll try my best to help you with my potential.

    Good Luck!

  • Dear moh abd ALRhman,

    THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Yes, you are right the coconut water is sugary, and it is a natural drink. The sugary taste of coconut water depends on different factors such as the genotype of the palm, soil condition, environmental condition and at times synergetic effects of several factors. A special coconut variety is available in my country being “king coconut”, and this variety is only for drinking purposes.

    Good Luck!
