Anyone can write but it takes a master to write well. The perfect combination of words, letters and usages to tell a story or write a piece of prose can be achieved only by an expert. But mind you, even experts fail sometimes. That is the beauty of writing. There are a few tips that you can follow to improve your writing skills.

Make sure you read a lot: Before you start writing, you must know what is being written. So you must read a lot. This has many benefits. You will not only be able to learn new things from other authors but also know where you fit. In order to create a niche for yourself you need to know what others are writing and create a style for yourself. Being a voracious reader will definitely help you write better.

Keep writing: If you are serious about writing, never take a break. Writing is just like sports. You need to stay fit and healthy if you are a sportsperson. If you take a break it will be difficult to return to your prime form. Writing is just like that. In order to keep your creativity at a high level you need to keep writing. Practice for a short time every day with random essay writing topics. Make it a habit and you will find it easier to slip into your creative best if you do so.

Concentrate on the basics: for a writer the basics are grammar and style. There is practically no piece of literature that has been so good that the readers have ignored the lack of grammar. It just does not happen. So make sure you know your grammar and adhere to the basic rules of the language that you plan to write in. Bad grammar not only reflects on the ignorance of the writer but also makes it difficult for the reader to understand what the writer is trying to say. Learning grammar is not a creative pursuit, it is an academic one. Arduous though it might be, it is something that has to be done. Once you learn your grammar, it will come naturally to you when you write.

Appreciate criticism: This is perhaps the most difficult thing for a writer. It takes a tremendous amount of effort to write. You put in your mind and soul into your writing. When someone criticizes it you will feel like you are being personally attacked. It is natural. But remember, what you write is for others to read. You will never be able to satisfy all those who read your literary work. You must be willing to accept the fact that your work will be criticized. Every work has scope for further improvement. Learn to accept criticism. It will help you in the long run.

Read your work aloud: Silly though it may sound, reading out your prose may be very effective. Hearing your words will help you judge them better. If you are planning to make a presentation, this will enable you to listen exactly how the words and usages will sound. You will also be able to make the necessary changes before it goes out.

  • Reading, reading, and more reading. :D :D Yes! I can attest to that. Reading a lot of books really helps a lot. Nowadays, when I read, rather than the normal of trying to finish off the story, I will pay more attention to the style of the author. It helps me in my fledgling effort in writing blogs in here.
