1. The unpredictable and uncontrollable, but normal, reduction of work force due to resignations, retirement, sickness or death
2. Loss of a material or resource due to obsolescence or spoilage.

The word 'attrition' (pronounced /əˈtrɪʃn/) also has another meaning which I find very interesting.
"The process of making somebody or something, especially our enemy, weaker by repeatedly attacking them or creating problem for them."
