Are You a Cyberchondriac?

Are you the one who always checks out the Internet for medical advice for every symptom you have? Are you anxious why you have such symptoms only to find you’re not sick at all?  Then you might be a cyberchondriac! Cyber what???

Cyberchondriac is a combination of the word ‘cyber’ which is related to computers and the Internet (Macmillan Dictionary), and ‘hypochondriac’, a person who thinks he or she is sick but in reality he or she is well or does not have any serious illness. There are people who self-diagnose these days which often lead to mistreatment. Moreover, they worry too much which spoil their day.

Here’s a couple of example

1. Gren googled for hours searching for medical advice about his stomachache. Little did he know, he’s beginning to be a cyberchondriac. He has forgotten that he ate a lot of steaks and didn’t drink enough water. He’s just constipated!

2. Liz: “You’ve been glued to your computer for a long time, Von. What have you been reading about?”

Von: “I’m looking for a solution for my headache. It’s killing me (Being over-reacting)!”

Liz: “I think you have a headache because you spend too much time playing online games instead of getting enough sleep. You even forget to take your vitamins every day!  Stop being such a cyberchondriac.”

I hope you learned something about this term and not to worry too much about minor physical and mental discomfort. Stay healthy and live happily!

  • Hi, ☪Ⱬẕⓘ₦Ⱥ☪!

Thank you for the comment! I agree with you. It really depends on how we use the Internet for the betterment of ourselves and to the people around us.

  • You're always welcome, Valentine!

  • Robbie, thank you for welcoming me! It's great to know that someone still remembers you after such a long-long break:)))

  • Hello, Valentine!

Welcome back to MyEC! The book you recommended seems interesting. Some people are very cautious and do what it takes not to acquire terrible illnesses. Thanks a lot for taking the time commenting here...

    Have a great midweek!

    Robbie

  • Reading your blog, I remembered one book "Three men in a boat" written by Jerome K. Jerome. If you didn't read, highly recommend. Very funny book. One the main characters came to the library of British Museum to learn about the trifling disease. But when he read a disease handbook, he left the library realized that he had all symptoms of all diseases except puerperal fever.

  • Hello, Elf-Noor!

Thank you for your comment! Sometimes, we need to be brave enough to accept the reality that we are not well. But the good thing about the Internet is that you could find support groups or people who are dealing with the same pain and discomfort. From there, you could find strength and that you are not alone.

By the way, your sense of humor could uplift you and not to take your illness so seriously...

    Stay safe,

    Robbie

  • @ Svitlana

You're very much welcome! Enjoy your stay on MyEC...

  • Hello, Warda!

Glad to hear you are not a cyberchondriac! I can totally relate with you. If the prescribe medications do not have any packet information included, I usually check out Mims online. It's much better to aware of what we are taking. In my case, I'm a caregiver to my dad and I must read and understand all the information and medical terms associated with his illness as well as the medications that need to be taken.

Thank you for sharing your comment!

    Cheers,

    Robbie

  • Hi, Glee!

You're welcome! The English language keeps changing... People like to mashup words or combine them to create new terms. There are actually some common ones such as glamping, staycation, fantabulous and so on. I think the Internet and social media can easily make them common.

Thanks a lot for sharing your observation. I appreciate it! Some people would like to be pro-active and do not mind to spend a lot of penny for unnecessary examinations just to be sure they are not contracting any terrible diseases.

    See you around,

    Robbie
