Accents and famous characters

I know, I know. Another blog about accents. I searched MyEC and found 52 (or was it 58?) pages related to the keyword 'accent'. Honestly, I did not check them out. Why? I have my reasons, so don't ask! Here are a bunch of different types of accents that fictional characters could be recognized by them:

Slur: an act of speaking indistinctly so that sounds or words run into one another or a tendency to speak in such a way, esp. when someone is tired or drunk

Barney Gumble, well, the belly beer says it all.

Talk posh: to speak in an upper-class way

King George VI

Drawl: a slow way of speaking, with long vowel sounds

Forrest Gump

and the last but not least,

Brogue: a marked accent, esp. Irish or Scottish

Montgomery Scott

Dear Mary, I love her accent too. She always makes me laugh.

  • " How do you say 'rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr'?"
    " A helicopter."
Poor girl. She totally lost it when they were making fun of her accent.
    Ha!
    Thanks for your video.
Now, about your 'theory'; I think you're exactly right. The important thing is the art of communication, no matter what kind of accent you have.

  • I like the accent of the character that Sofia Vergara plays in 'Modern Family'. It's so funny! Her english is fluid but her pronunciation is a mess... Just like mine hahaha

I've my own theory about accents. It's long to explain here, but I can summarize it like this:
    - Improve your pronunciation = Cool.
    - To get obsessed trying to get an specific 'english native' accent (UK, US, Aussie...) = Stupid.

    Cool topic btw.
