A Glimpse of Saint-Petersburg

Along Nevsky ProspektNevsky Prospect is the main street of the city and one of the oldest in Saint Petersburg. It begins at the Admiralty Building and leads to Moscow railway station, and then runs furher on to the Alexander Nevsky Monastery. Along it were built the banks, the best shops and the palaces of the nobility.

If you start down this street from the Admiralty you will not be paricularly impressed at all. But as soon as you cross the Moika you will find that the street becomes wider, the buildings more varied and interestings.

Further on the right hand side you will see a square on which towers the Kazan Cathedral. A semi circular court is formed in front of the cathedral by its majestic gracefui colonnade.Monuments to Kutuzov and Barclay de Tolly were erected in front of the cathedral in 1837.

Continuing down Nevsky Prospect you will soon come to Brodsky street and see a palace in the distance. This Palace was built by C. Rossi for the Grand Duke Mikhail on a large site between the Nevsky, the rivers Moika, Fontanka and the Ekaterininsky Canal. Today the Mikhailovsky Palace is occupied by the State Russian Museum.
