  • ISTANBUL’S 1600 YEAR OLD HARBOR THEODOSIUS

I would like to mention this time about a new discover in İstanbul,

Doing some reconstructions, unearted the harbor which is dated A.D. 4 th century.
This harbor with the other remains which accompany it, reached at today from the Otoman, Byzantium, Roman, Ancient Grek and Neolithic periods.
Then Finding archaeological splendor brings up important data for the history of İstanbul.

In particular, The harbor of Theodosius one of the most important harbors of the Byzantine period. This harbor was built in the 4th century and used up to the 7th century which was known from the notes of travellers who visited İstanbul in the mid-16th century.

Byzantion was founded at the stragetic crossroads and held undercontrol the commercial routs. Theodosius played a key role in this controlling. This harbor was constracted by I. Theodosius due to meet the needs of the Eastern Roman Empires ( 379-395 AD.)

A total of 34 ships, one quay, 23 graves, a gold Justiniaus coin and some items which reflect everyday life in this period, were discovered.

The remains are thought a natural disaster largely destroyed 11th century.

Briefly, The location of Theodosius had been already known from the written sources and ancient maps but not known however were exact position, size and layout. So The excavations are important in terms of providing information about shipping and ship types in the period and thanks to İstanbul on behalf of the common heritage of the world culture.

I hope, it will be interesting reading for who interest ancient cultures.

    With my regards,
    Selma,

You're right, about "the" turkey lovers !!! Too funny really as when i talk about Turkey, it's never the bird that comes to my mind, but always the country.
I should have written "turkey" with a capital letter, i guess it would have made the difference. Thanks for correcting me Salim, good to have an english teacher who is checking my work :)))

Have a good end of the day.
