Failing in exams is one of the common problems that many school, college and university students face during their lifetime. There is not one, but a number of reasons that can be associated with this problem. Every student has a different style of learning, and therefore, one problem or one solution cannot be generalized. Here is a list of reasons, which many times lead to exam failure, and their appropriate solutions.

1. Plain reading instead of learning

In my education counseling career, I have seen a number of students who simply read the text, multiple time instead of understanding and learning it. This is one of the biggest mistakes that students do, as they are not following the brain mechanism of memorizing things. Our brain is a very smart functioned device, and it has the built-in capability to demarcate between the important and unimportant things, and remember them likewise. Things like your soccer match, your favorite TV show are connected with appropriate links of emotions, anxiety etc. This helps the brain to remember those dates and events well and for a longer period of time. Thus, when you are reading a text, try to connect it with yourself in some way, to link it with an emotion, feeling or anything that could simplify the remembering task of the brain.

2. Alien to the exam environment

Most students study with their friends or in their sitting room with a very relaxed mood. This is obviously very different than the environment they will encounter in the examination hall. Examination hall anxiety is one prominent reason that affects the grades of students as many are not comfortable with it. It is apparent that you cannot change the environment; however, you can make yourself accustom to it. When you are learning in your home, practice to sit alone, without any disturbance. Try to imitate the examination hall environment as much as possible. Also, do the writing practice as much as possible, as you will have to do both reading and writing in the exam.

3. Improper time management

Studying everything at the eleventh hour will never give you high grades. Target for the moon, even if you will miss, you will land among the stars. So, if you are just targeting passing marks, it is probable that you end up failing the exam. However, if you have prepared enough to claim an A grade before the exam starts, it is least likely that you will fail. Try to schedule your time, not in weeks, but in days. At least one month before the exam, try to make a planner and assign daily tasks to yourself. Make sure that you have at least 3 to 4 days for revision, in case it is your final exams and you have to cover the entire syllabus.

4. Question attempting sequence

My teacher used to tell me that attempt the question you know well first, and do not follow the sequence given in the question paper. I always wanted to be well structured and that is why I didn't follow this technique, until my graduate degree. There are a number of reasons for which you should attempt your best question first. Often, there is not enough time to attempt the entire paper, and if you go with the sequence, you can get short of time for the best one. Your teacher will be checking 100s of papers at one go, and he or she will not have enough time to scan through each and every detail properly. Thus, your first impression is very important and might last till the last question. So, if you have been able to give a good first impact, the teacher might be lenient towards your mediocrely attempted questions.

It is my personal advice to students to not consider themselves inferior to anyone, and don’t lose hope if you have failed once or even twice. You just have to analyze your procedure of learning and then improvise it, until you find your way.
