2018 & 2022 World Cup Hosts

Hi fans of football/soccer,FIFA has just announced the hosts of 2018 and 2022 World Cups in Switzerland. Russia is hosting the 2018 World Cup and Qatar the 2022. Did you see the announcement ceremony on TV? Congratulations to Russia (for Europe) and Qatar (for Asia)! The two countries have never hosted a World Cup before.Do you think Russia and Qatar deserve to be selected as the hosts? Which countries do your think should have been selected? Do you think the two countries will each be able to give us a successful and exciting World Cup? What really matters in the selecting process? Are you living near to the hosts?Your friend,Expector

  • @Herry: You are not alone - in fact, many people think England, the motherland of football, could have been the host of 2018. But this time FIFA decided to let down the advanced countries such as England and the U.S.

Do you think FIFA should reach out to those countries that never hosted a World Cup?
  • It's quite reasonable that athletes want to play in a more comfortable situation. But Qatar knows its weak part and has promised to make their stadiums suitable for any match. The country has convinced the world that the hot weather won't be a problem by presenting some convincing measures it will take. So the World Cup is on the way to Asia the second time.

Apart from the hot weather, some say Qatar is so small. It can be a challenge for a so small country to put up so large a number of visitors at a time.

As for Russia, the 2018 host, some say it's 'too big'. Athletes will have to take hours to move from one city to another.
  • @Talibah: So you don't think the hot weather wil be a problem. Umm, same here. Your comment reminds me of the South Africa World Cup, though. It was cold there since South Africa is located in the southern hemisphere.

Did you know athletes aften complain about things such as food, temperature, the turf of the stadium etc? I know they should play even when it's raining or snowing heavily.
  • So the temperature inside the stadium will be suitable for any matches, even though the outside temperature can be as high as 47 ℃ when the 2022 Cup takes place there.
  • Please check out adam's blog about the World Cup.
  • Congratulations! ))..I will go to Russia in 2018 to see it as it's nearby. It's great news!
  • Thanks to all of you!

Some may be concerned about Qatar's hot weather in summer - the temperature may be too high when the Cup takes place there. But Qatar's officials promised to make their stadiums comfortable and suitable for the matches. Do you think the hot weather is a problem?

@walid: Yes, the economic or political status can be a decisive factor. But it seems to me that FIFA is determined to let the World Cup go anywhere - to Africa, to Brazil, to Russia, to the Middle East. FIFA used to perfer Europe and America, though.

@Talibah: Yes, Russia and Qatar were lucky enough to beat their opponents - 'Nothing is impossible.' I'm looking forward to Brazil World Cup, too.
  • I don't like football! (^_^)
  • Russia deserves it for sure!
  • yeh certainly both deserve and they will prove
